Smoking Lady
Smoking Lady — Spain, 1970s (reimagined years later)
A layered portrait where memory, smoke, and shadow merge into something both intimate and timeless.
Back in the 70’s, my girlfriend and I took our bicycles to Europe for a long summer ride. After traveling down the coast of France, we found ourselves exhausted in Spain and decided to send our bikes home and hitchhike instead.
Our first ride was with three Spaniards who were traveling as well. What began as a simple lift turned into something much more—they took us in, and we spent over a week together.
At the end of that adventure, we went to one of their homes and shared a final dinner with his family. This woman was extraordinary, and she graciously allowed me to take her photograph. It remains one of the most memorable moments of that six-month journey.
Several years later, I returned to that image and created this piece— A layered portrait where smoke and shadow merge, revealing both mystery and quiet strength.
